Mum's funeral in a couple of hours. Not an event I'm looking forward too, but not because it's burying mum, etc, but rather because I feel I'm only there because it's what people do. I said my goodbyes before she died, the service and burial are in truth little but a ritualistic charade to me. I do understand their importance for other people though so I will be there, ticking all the right boxes.

In order to try and add some personal relevancy to the proceedings I put two pieces of music into the service, but I've had a last minute panic on those choices. Originally, I opted for 'Von' by Sigur Ros and 'Do You Realize?' by The Flaming Lips, but over the past week or so I've been growing more and more uncomfortable with them.

The main reason for this has been the poor recording of 'Von'. It's quite a quiet, bassy recording and I have visions of the vicar forgetting to to turn down the volume before the Flaming Lips track and shaking the foundations of our ancient village church. I have new selections now, namely 'Mysteries' by Beth Gibbons and 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley. Both perfectly mastered and certified safe to newly restored masonry.

So now it's just waiting. Waiting for the time to tick by and for Lorraine to drive down from Manchester. Then we'll get the service and the burial over with and many people will move on to the Coach & Horses to say the real goodbyes ;)

You're The Handmaid's Tale!

by Margaret Atwood

An outraged feminist, you have been oppressed and even silenced in
your life, fueling your fury against the society as it stands. Your role has been
strictly defined by society and you are almost certainly unsatisfied with it. You
have some vague idea of how this has come to be, but insufficient power to stop it,
let alone reverse the trend. And somehow you blame yourself for everything because
people ask you to. Beware people renaming your nation a Republic.

A bizarre story loosely related to my mum's death, from Sky News:

"A leading British brain surgeon has been suspended from work following a dispute over a bowl of soup.

Dr Terence Hope was sent home from the Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham, where newspapers say there is a 39-day waiting list for brain operations, after being accused of taking extra croutons without paying, hospital sources said on Monday."

Current Music: Sierpinski - Liegnitz

It seems nowhere has yet picked up that Christopher Eccleston is the new Doctor Who...

Current Music: Astrobotnia - Portable Motor Home

My mum died at 2pm this afternoon as a result of head injuries sustained following a fall downstairs early this morning.

The doctors at Queen's Medical Centre told me that she was badly injured shortly after our arrival at hospital and that she may only have a few hours left. While sitting by her bedside, a nurse told me that studies have shown that patients in such a condition can still hear. Suddenly, everything I was saying carried enormous weight, it was clear that this was the last opportunity I would have to say things that she might hear.

I had the room cleared and said the things I needed to say. She died minutes afterwards.

So, if I am to impart to you something from this day of personal tragedy, it would be to never put off the things you need to say. You never know when fate will take away that opportunity forever.

A new track by me, the first one I've completed in ages and probably the most 'conventional' thing I've ever done - The Ballad Of Jennifer Garner.

It's a ~5MB .ogg file, so you'll need Winamp or something that plays that file type.
